ODADAS and ODMH recently hired a legislative liaison, Jonathan Baker, who will serve as the point of contact for both agencies for legislative issues pertaining to mental illness and addiction. Prior to starting his new position last week, Jonathan worked a combined seven years in various roles at the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate.

I sat down with Jonathan to learn more about the responsibilities of a legislative liaison and what he hopes to accomplish in his new role.

It has been a busy couple of weeks at the Ohio departments of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services and Mental Health. Last Tuesday, ODMH Director Tracy Plouck spoke at a press conference at the Ohio Statehouse to announce a new partnership between ODMH and the Ohio Department of Medical Assistance (Ohio Medicaid) aimed at improving the way that psychotropic medications, including anti-psychotics, are being prescribed to Ohio’s children. During the next three years, the state will invest $1 million to launch this new quality-improvement initiative.

“We need to bottle what you have here and spread it all over the state …,” ODADAS Director Orman Hall told attendees at the 20th anniversary celebration of the OASIS Men’s Therapeutic Community, which was held Sept. 10 at the Pickaway Correctional Institution.

The mission of the OASIS (Our Awareness of Self Increases Success) program, which is a partnership between ODADAS and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and housed at PCI, is to help its participants break the cycle of addiction and crime.

ODADAS/ODMH Joint Fiscal Staff on the Money with Consolidation Progress – Part 2

Posted on 9/11/2012 by in ODMH ODADAS Consolidation

By Ashley González

In August, I sat down with ODADAS Fiscal Chief Rosaland Gatewood-Tye and ODMH Fiscal Chief Dalon Myricks to gain their perspective about the consolidation of the fiscal departments from both agencies, which began in October 2011. In the second part of this two-part series, the two fiscal leaders gauge their progress and give advice to the leaders of other divisions who have more recently begun consolidation efforts.

Part 2:
Ashley: How much progress has been made in the consolidation of the two fiscal divisions?

Rosaland: Because we have been together so long, and we have already had the opportunity to look at the operations of how each department handles functions, we have already previously done a lot of work where we started to identify what would be the best practice, and now we’ve had the opportunity to kind of work side by side. So now as the larger consolidation groups are rolling out their inventory and their processes, we’re pretty much at the end of identifying what’s going to be the best way that this happens. So we’ve been able to really have a huge benefit of spending time together because now we’re at that point where we can pretty much just put down the recommendation is going to be on how do we function as one department.

ODADAS/ODMH Joint Fiscal Staff on the Money with Consolidation Progress

With the approaching one-year anniversary of the consolidation of the ODADAS and ODMH Fiscal Divisions, I recently sat down with both Fiscal Chiefs – Rosaland Gatewood-Tye (ODADAS) and Dalon Myricks (ODMH) – to gain their perspective on their progress so far and what still needs to be accomplished.

Two-part series:

Part 1:
Ashley: What challenges did you face when you began consolidating the two agency Fiscal Divisions in October 2011?

Dalon: So we’re coming up almost to the anniversary of it [consolidation].

Rosaland: We should have a party!

Dalon: One of the things I think that was sort of at us, you know, was understanding each other’s work environments a little sooner than just being able to transition into it. So we found ourselves in the middle of a – I don’t want to call it a crisis, but really where critical decisions needed to be made and you didn’t know enough in order to give a full decision to it, but you had to make one anyways. And we found ourselves in that situation on several different fronts. I think what that did was showed that we were all-in, and it showed a commitment from us as CFOs that we were going to work through it. When I first think about it, I don’t think we had all of the right questions or answers in front of us, but I think the decisions we’ve made were the same ones we would have made today. Like everything else, we’ve had our stumbles and we had our successes, but I think when folks look back at it now, the fact that we got together early, and tried to work on some non-work relationships to help foster the work relationships, probably was a good move for us.
